Appeal to Guardians
Dear Guardians,

Appeal for relief and rehabilitation of the victims
of cyclone in the affected areas of Sunderbans.

Monday, May 25, 2009 was witness to the devastating effects of Aila, a cyclone which gathering strength by the minute with a speed of more than 120 k.m. per hour lashed our State. Our city reeled under its impact and felt its fury.

The magnitude of the destruction however was much more than what met the eyes. The cyclone ripped through the mangrove forests of the Sunderbans completely inundating about 13 blocks of the South 24-Parganas leaving its inhabitants homeless – an easy prey to the wrath of Nature. The river swelled and rose to about 20 ft., broke embankments, moved inland and swept away hutments, saline water filled up the ponds and completely submerged the existing flora and fauna, destroying productivity of agricultural land. About 53,00,000 people have been affected across West Bengal with no food, shelter or any access to drinking water. They are in dire need of relief and rehabilitation.

We as an institution have decided to make our own humble efforts to help alleviate their suffering. A collection drive is being launched through pupils, guardians, teachers and members of staff. The amount collected will be utlised to offer relief and reconstruction materials, including food, water, medical supplies, clothes etc. directly to the affected people, utilising the services of NGOs operating in the Sunderbans. Our pupils with your help and support will make an individual effort to collect funds. We are sure that this would be a learning experience for them. We also intend to involve some of our pupils in the relief work.

A collection sheet is printed overleaf, for the use of the pupils. Each child must mention the name of the donors and amount donated in the collection sheet. No amount is small as each and every rupee will be useful for the lakhs of people who need to be rehabilitated. Additional photocopies of this sheet may be obtained if necessary from the class teacher, duly countersigned, after depositing the previous sheet.

The collection sheet along with cash collected should be enclosed in a sealed envelope and deposited with the class teacher by June 23, 2009. Please mention the name, class and section of the child on the envelope. Pupils collecting more than Rs.2000 will be given a special appreciation certificate by the School. Pupils collecting Rs.5000 and more will have their photographs published in the School’s Newsletter ‘POINTER’ while the top ten collectors will also be felicitated separately.

We are confident of receiving your support and cooperation in this effort of ours.

Thank you.
