South Pointers’ Tryst with Destiny at Nevada, USA
13/04/2009

The IRIS (Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science) National Fair 2008 was held from the 4th to the 6th of December, 2008 at Science City, Kolkata. It is a national level science fair aimed at promoting scientific fervour among young minds. The IRIS is a joint initiative of Intellndia Education, DST (Department of Science and Technology) and CII (Confederation of Indian Industry). Out of nearly 1000 entries from all over India only 100 projects were selected for participation at the national fair. Among them were Class XI students Debarghya Sarkar and Anish Mukherjee with their team project ‘Clamped Bottle Cap’ and Abhiroop Lahiri and Abhinava Dutta with their team project ‘Compass to N-sect and Angle’, both from South Point High School. In fact these were the only two projects that were selected for the National Fair from the whole of West Bengal. ‘Compass to n-sect an angle’ by Abhiroop Lahiri and Abhinava Dutta received a Special Award and ‘Clamped Bottle Cap’ by Debarghya Sarkar and Anish Mukherjee received a National Award. ‘Clamped Bottle Cap’ was short listed for participation at the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) along with 2 other teams and 5 individual projects winning the National Award. Those short-listed attended two Coaching Camps held in Mumbai conducted by SRC (Scientific Review Committee). The selection was for 2 team projects among the 3, and 4 individual projects among the 5, for participation at the international fair. One was held on 24th January, 2009 at HBCSE (Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education) and the other on 24th February, 2009 at NAB (National Association for the Blind). At the February coaching Camp the ‘Clamped Bottle Cap’ project was selected for the International Fair along with another team project. Another Coaching Camp will be held on the 18th of April, 2009. Debarghya and Anish will be going to Nevada, USA to represent India at the Intel ISEF in May, 2009. A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE TWO PROJECTS 1) CLAMPED BOTTLE-CAP It is a new design for a pilfer-proof bottle-cap aimed at curbing bottle forgery. Initially the design consisted of a ring and hook mechanism but it subsequently underwent many changes and now it has a bottle-neck with slots and holes where the cap gets clamped with the help of certain projections. Here not only the cap but the entire bottle-neck is destroyed. 2) COMPASS TO N-SECT AN ANGLE This is a new type of compass that can ‘n-sect’ an angle, ie. it can divide an angle into any sub-division or even draw any multiple of it. It looks like the chain of a cycle and has two discs of different radii. A pencil or pen attached to one of the discs traces out the angle.
