South Point School - Athletic Meet 2017
15/01/2017

Athletic Meet 2017 was held on January 14, 2017 at the Gitanjali Stadium. About nine hundred children from Nursery I to Class V participated in this glorious biennial event. The day’s events began with the lighting of the ceremonial torch and hoisting of the School Flag by the Chief Guest, Shri Subrata Bhattacharjee, a renowned footballer and Arjuna Award winner. The Head Boy and the Head Girl encircled the ground, holding aloft the flaming torch, while the school choir sang the Sports song, followed by the School song. A grand March Past followed. Participants of all track events (Nursery I to Class V), the Cubs and Bulbuls and the students of Sandipan, the free evening school for the underprivileged, run by South Point Foundation, walked across the field, cheerfully waving at the spectators. Heading the procession was a pupil of Class IV, proudly holding the School Flag. Other standard bearers each led a group of athletes. The rear of this procession comprised selected students of Classes III to V marching with colourful flags. As the Chief Guest delivered his address and declared the Meet open, the Head Boy and the Head Girl conducted the Oath-taking Ceremony. All participants vowed to take part in the Meet, in the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The two Drill Displays seemed to have brought a riot of colours on the field. The children of Nursery II to Class II were in pink and blue while the pupils of Classes III to V were in orange and yellow. Their well-coordinated movements and symmetrical formations were a treat for the eye. A breath-taking Karate Display followed, in which the young Karate exponents showed their skills and left everyone spellbound. Yet another attraction was the ‘Go As You Like’. Students dressed as Swami Vivekananda, a flower-girl, a clock, a tooth-paste, a toothbrush, etc. Apart from the Flat Races, there were interesting races like ‘Ola Ride’, ‘Let’s Help Mummy’, ‘Chalo Dilli Chalo’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Dakiya Dak Lya’, ‘Going to the Circus’, ‘A friend in Need and some others. The races for the Pointers ended with the Inter-House Relay. Thereafter, there were races for the Sandipan children, the staff and the guardians. The Championship Trophy was lifted by Sister Nivedita House while the Runner-up Trophy was lifted by David Hare House.

The day ended with the lowering of the School Flag and the National Anthem.
