Chessmate

South Point hosted “Chessmate”, an Inter-School Chess Championship in association with the Alekhine Chess Club, under the auspices of M.P. Birla Smarak Kosh (South Point), at South Point High School on Saturday, June 20, 2009. The championship was played in five rounds under the Federation International Des Echess (FIDE) rules in accordance with the Swiss League. Out of the 28 participating teams from 24 Schools, there were 19 boys’ teams and 9 girls’ teams. In the Boys’ Category, the winners were South Point High School, followed by The Scottish Church Collegiate School as the first runner-up and Calcutta Boys’ School as the second runner-up. The Best Board prize for the First Board went to Nilabro Datta of the M.P. Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School, the Best Board prize for the Second Board went to Debarshi Mukherjee of South Point High School, the Best Board prize for the Third Board went to Sreyan Bhowmick of The Scottish Church Collegiate School and the Best Board prize for the Fourth Board went to Ronit Chakraborty of La Martiniere for Boys. In the Girls’ Category, the winners were South Point High School, followed by Bidya Bharati Girls’ High School as first runner-up and Mahadevi Birla Girls’ Higher Secondary School as second runner-up. The Best Board prize for the First Board went to Sohini Ganguly of South Point High School, the Best Board prize for the Second Board went to Sukanya Dutta of South Point High School and the Best Board prize for the Third Board went to Diotima Dutta Gupta of Bidya Bharati Girls High School. The Chief Guest for the event was the only lady grandmaster from West Bengal, Miss Nisha Mohta. Prize money worth Rs.22,750/- will be handed over to the winners at the Annual Function on July 04, 2009.
