Picnic

The annual staff picnic was held on Saturday, January 06, 2018 at Covent Garden on Diamond Harbour Road, Shirakole (24-Parganas South).

Biennial Art & Craft Exhibition

The Art and Craft Exhibition, which is a biennial feature at South Point, was held in the School premises from December 21 to 23, 2017. Prior to this, in order to facilitate the arrangements for the exhibition, classes for Nursery I to Class I were suspended from December 18 to 20, 2017, Classes II & III were suspended on December 19 & 20, 2017 and Classes IV & V were suspended on December 20, 2017.

The renowned painter and art critic, Shri Debabrata Chakraborty was the Chief Guest for the Art and Craft Exhibition. On the day of the inauguration, some students of South Point High School sang the opening song followed by the school song. This was followed by the welcome address by Smt. Dalbir Kaur Chadda, Principal, South Point School. Thereafter, the Chief Guest addressed the gathering, lit the ceremonial lamp, cut the ribbon and inaugurated the exhibition.

Numerous art and craft exhibits were on display. The exhibition showcased the creative potential of the budding artists of the school, ranging from Nursery I to Class XII. There were drawings in poster colour, acrylic colour, water colour and pastel colour, art work in the form of mosaic and collage work. There were craft items like terracotta pots, plates and vases, wall hangings, lamp shades, trays and coasters, pencil holders, dolls made of hand gloves and socks, to name a few. Numerous glass paintings were also on display. The exhibition included more than two thousand five hundred paintings and other works of art.

About one hundred pupils of Classes II to IV, under the guidance of Art Teachers, had made paper bags with vegetable print, decorative flowers and other creative items at workshops held earlier. Hand-painted dupattas and t-shirts were also made by children at the workshops. The Class V students worked with acrylic colours on canvas with ‘Nature’ as the subject.

Students of Classes I to V had also worked on theme projects. The topics were:

  • Class I – Picnic at the Farm
  • Class II – The Enchanted World
  • Class III – Helping Hands
  • Class IV – Hooked by Books
  • Class V – Inspiring Lives

Colourful charts and models were exhibited and some students were selected as live models and demonstrators. A special attraction was the room in which drawings and craft work by the students of Sandipan, the free evening school run by South Point Foundation and of the KMCP School Hazra Road, adopted by South Point, were exhibited. On December 21, 2017 some students of Sandipan visited the exhibition, while some students of the KMCP School visited it on the following day.

Children of the Co-Curricular Activity Department staged various performances in the courtyard; this added to the festive ambience of the occasion..

The exhibition was open to visitors from 12 noon to 5.30 pm on all the days. Over five thousand visitors came to see the exhibition.

Participation

Shresth Mahapatra of Class IV C (Afternoon) had participated in the 3rd MCA All Bengal U–16 Open Rapid Chess Tournament organised by Modern Chess Academy, Hooghly, held at Bidhan Chandra College, Rishra on December 30 & 31, 2017. He scored 5½ points out of possible eight points and was placed 2nd on the merit list. Shresth received a trophy and a certificate. 

OHSAS

An Electrical Training in compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 for Electricians, the members of Physics & Composite Labs and Liftman was conducted by Sri C. Banerjee, Electrical Consultant of the School on January 11, 2018 at the School premises.

Inter-School Festival

On January 11, 2018 Pointers of Classes IV & V participated in Jubilare 2018, the Inter-School Festival held at Shri Shikshayatan School. They participated in Prashna (Quiz), E-Boi (Power Point Presentation), Chatushkone (Chess), Akriti (Canvas Painting), Abrittir Ashor (Group Recitation) and Mudra Sync (Group Dance). Archishman Mallick of Class V G (Morning) and Shauryadiptya Mukherjee of Class IV G (Afternoon) formed the Quiz team and they lifted the Second Prize. Saptashwa Ghosh of Class V C (Morning), Swapnil Roy of Class V B (Afternoon), Badotroyee Mondal and Aneesha Ghosh of Class IV G (Afternoon) participated in the Group Recitation and won the Second Prize. Aayush Bhattacherjee of Class V D (Morning), Shounak Mazumder of Class V D (Morning), Meghshubhra Dam of Class V E (Morning) and Aarshiya Biswas of Class V G (Afternoon) comprised the chess team. They became the champions.

The winners received individual trophies and certificates as well as three trophies for the school.

Participation

The league of Asset Talent Scholars awarded Arshisman Mallick of Class V G (Morning) a certificate of merit and the esteemed title of Asset Talent Scholar in recognition of his exemplary performance in Asset Talent Search 2017-2018. His performance placed him ahead of 1,42,717 Asset students and two grades above his peers.

Parijat Dwary of Class V E (Morning) has been winning a number of prizes in Table Tennis. He had participated in the Kalyan Jayant Memorial Table Tennis Tournament 2017 (Stage III) held at YMCA Chowringhee from December 15–18, 2017. He became the winner in Cadet Boys (Under 12) singles event. He received a certificate and cash prize worth Rs.500/-. He had participated in the Dakshin Dinajpur District Table Tennis Championship 2017 (Stage II) held at Balurghat Town Club Indoor Stadium on December 24 & 25, 2017. Parijat became the 1st Runner Up in Cadet Boys (Under 12) singles event and received a certificate, medal and cash prize worth Rs.300/-. He also became the 1st Runner Up in Junior Boys (Under 18) singles event and received a certificate, medal and cash prize worth Rs.400/-. Parijat participated in the Purilia District Table Tennis Tournament 2017 (Stage II held at Chittaranjan High School on December 30 & 31, 2017. He became the winner in Cadet Boys (Under 12) singles event and received a trophy.

Bidipto Sen of Transition A (Afternoon) participated in the Recitation Competition held at Bidhan Shishu Udyan on January 7, 2018 organised by Dr. B. C. Roy Memorial Committee. He received a book as the 1st prize. Bidipto has been given a certificate too.

Examination

  • Class Assessment-II for Classes VI to VIII began on January 08, 2018.
  • Practice Test for Class X (CBSE) and Pre-Board-II Examination for Class XII

began on January 10, 2018.

Participation

Smt. Sarbani Sanyal attended a Capacity Building Programme on Business Studies at CBSE Centre of Excellence, Salt Lake on January 12 & 13, 2018. The resource persons were Smt. Sanjukta Mukherjee and Smt. Shivani Nagrath.

An interactive session organized by ‘Friends of Tribal Society’ was held at Kala Mandir, on January 13, 2018. The seminar started at around 10:15 a.m. in the presence of representatives from several reputed schools of the city including South Point High School. An inspiring topic “Celebrating Life @ Geeta Way” was the talk of the session. Pujyashree Bhupendrabhai Panaya, a noted Indian saint, known for inspiring thousand of youths around the world gave a lecture on how to achieve success in life in the lines of the Hindu Holy Book, Bhagvad Gita. The session ended with the felicitation of the raffle donors which included schools like The Heritage School, M.P. Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School, Abhinav Bharati, Jain School Kolkata and South Point High School.

Social Service

12 pupils from Classes IX & XI visited the Transit Camp of the Gangasagar pilgrims at Outram Ghat in Kolkata in the evening of January 12, 2018 and distributed food packets consisting of Puri, Halva along with packaged water to 2000 pilgrims, as a part of the ongoing social service project undertaken by the School.

The fourth inter-house competition (Debate)

The fourth inter-house competition (Debate) was held on January 17, 2018. Eighteen children (three from each House) participated in this. Nine children spoke for the motion, ‘Students Fly on the Wings of Books, not Gadgets’ and nine spoke against. The moderator for this event was Ms Hasnu Mukherjee. The contest was judged by Ms A. C. Ray, Ms S. Rajalakshmi and Ms Tamali Ghosh.

The results are as follows:–
