Participation

Pupils of Class XI participated in TTIS Challenge 2018 organised by Young Metro, CK Birla Hospitals and Narayana Group of Schools, on January 18 & 21, 2018 at City Centre, Salt Lake, Kolkata. South Point High School participated in X Factor, Creative Writing, Eastern Solo, Mask Making and Portrait Painting. South Point High School qualified for the semi finals in Eastern Solo and Mask making and made to the top 10 out of the 89 participating schools.

Participation

On January 18, 2018 about 407 children of Class IV went for a picnic to IBIZA while on January 19, 2018 about 455 children of Class V went to the same place for a picnic. On both the days children started leaving school at 7.45 am and returned to school around 4.30 pm. They were served with breakfast and lunch. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They were accompanied by teachers, service staff, as well as, some selected guardians from each class.

On January 19, 2018 the students of Nursery I to Transition brought potatoes and onions to give towards the social service project, ‘Reaching Out’, an ongoing project started in the Diamond Jubilee year of the school. The children had been asked to bring a minimum of one potato and one onion. The collection went to two NGOs, Calcutta Social Project and New Age.

The Intra-Class Cricket Finals were held on January 20, 2018 at Vivekananda Park. In the Class IV Finals the Yellow Team won the match by 7 wickets. Kaustav Paul of Class IV D (Morning) made 28 runs off 23 balls and was declared the ‘Man of the Match’. In the Class V Finals too the Yellow Team won the match. They won by 9 wickets. Aditya Roy of Class V F (Afternoon) was declared the ‘Man of the Match’. He scored a good 33 runs, took two catches and a wicket too. Both Kaustav and Aditya received individual trophies. The winning teams also received the rolling trophies.

Aarshiya Biswas of Class V G (Afternoon) had participated in the All Bengal Age Group Chess Championship 2018, organised by Barisha Chess Academy and recognised by Kolkata District Chess Association under the aegis of Bengal Chess Association. The tournament was held at Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road, Kolkata on January 6 & 7, 2018. Aarshiya scored 5 points out of 7 rounds and was placed 2nd on the merit list, in the Under 11 Girls Category. She received the First Runner Up Trophy and a certificate. Aarshiya participated in the 2nd Unnayan All Bengal Sub Junior Chess Championship 2018, organised by Unnayan in association with Senco Gold & Diamond. This tournament was held at Santosh Mitra Square Shishu Uddyan, Kolkata on January 13 & 14, 2018. She scored 5 points out of 7 rounds, was placed 1st on the merit list in the Under 11 Girls Category and received the Champion’s Trophy along with a certificate.

Aayush Bhattacherjee of Class V D (Morning) another chess player, who has been receiving numerous awards, had participated in the International San Bernardino Open 2017 Tournament held from October 20 to 22, 2017 in Switzerland. Aayush received the 3rd prize. He was awarded with a certificate and cash prize worth Rs.41,000/-. Aayush stood 2nd in the Hindu School Chess Competition 2017 held at Andhra School on December 14, 2017, in the Under 10 Boys category. He received a shield, a certificate and prize money worth Rs.600/-. The Bangladesh Chess Federation invited Aayush to participate in the Marcel 1st Division Chess League 2017 held at Dhaka from December 30, 2017 to January 7, 2018. Aayush scored 2 points out of 9 games and received a certificate of merit.

Parijat Dwary of Class V E (Morning) had participated in the 83rd State and Inter-district Table Tennis Championship 2017-18 held at Kshudiram Anushilan Kendra between January 15 & 19, 2018. He bagged the 1st prize in the Cadet Boys Singles event and received a trophy, a certificate and cash prize worth Rs.1200/-.

Examination

658 pupils appeared for the Admission Test for the Science Stream on January 20, 2018. 24 pupils took the Eligibility-cum-Aptitude Test for Humanities with Mathematics on the same day.

Participation

Anurag Chakraborty of Class V E (Morning), Shreyi Bhattacharjee of Class V F (Morning) and Debmalya Khan of Class V G (Afternoon) participated in the Inter-School Mathematics Contest, Mio Amore Mathemazic 2017–18, held on January 27, 2018 at Taki Boys’ School campus, Kolkata. All three children qualified among the top 10 students. Each will receive a scholarship which will be handed over at a special function to be held later in the year.

Sarwagya Kumar Gupta of Class II G (Morning) and Kushal Kumar Gupta of Class V F (Morning) participated in the 11th UCMAS WEST BENGAL STATE LEVEL ABACUS AND ARITHMETIC COMPETITION, 2018, held on January 23, 2018 at Rabindra Manch, Dum Dum. Both won the Runner-up Trophy. Kushal has won this trophy for three consecutive years.

Tuhin Mondal of Class III G (Afternoon) participated in the District Chess Championship Tournament 2018, organised by South 24 Parganas Chess Association, affiliated to Bengal Chess Association on January 23, 2018. He was placed 1st in the Under 9 category. Tuhin received a certificate and a trophy.

Saraswati Puja Celebrations

Saraswati Puja was celebrated in school on January 22, 2018. The day began with the ‘puja’ followed by the ‘aarti’. Thereafter, a beautiful cultural programme was put up by both the schools. The choir of South Point School began the programme with a Rabindrasangeet befitting the occasion. This was followed by a dance by graceful little dancers of the junior school. The students of South Point High School put up a solo and a group dance. Two singers of the senior school mesmerised everyone through their songs – a bhajan and a rendition on Todi Raga. After the cultural programme, ‘pushpanjali’ was offered to the Goddess and ‘prasad’ was distributed to one and all. The school, otherwise, remained closed on that day.

Special Assemblies

Special Assemblies to celebrate Netaji’s birthday and Republic Day were held according to the following schedule:

  • January 24, 2018  – Class II (Morning & Afternoon)
  • January 25, 2018  – Class IV (Morning & Afternoon) 

Participation

A total of 43 pupils of Classes IX & XI accompanied by two teachers, attended an interactive session with the celebrated author Ruskin Bond on January 24, 2018 at Victoria Memorial. The session was a part of the Junior Kolkata Literary Meet. The author spoke at length about the authors he loved reading as a child and those who have shaped him as a writer. He also took questions from school children who asked him about his personal experiences, the autobiographical elements in his creations and even his personal regrets.

Examination

  • Pre-Board-II Practical Examination for Class XII began on January 24, 2018.
  • Pre-Board-II Project & Viva-Voce for Class XII began on January 25, 2018.

Participation

Adrija Gharai of Class V D (Morning) had participated in the DKS Intra Coaching Tennis Evaluation tournament 2017 held at DKS Sports Complex, Kolkata, from December 1 to 20, 2017. Adrija became the Finalist (First Runner Up). She received a trophy and a certificate.

Shounak Mazumder of Class V D (Morning), a budding chess player, had participated in All Bengal State Amateur Fide Rated Chess Championship 2018 held at ICCR Kolkata from January 22 to 25, 2018. He scored 5.5 points out of 8 points and stood First in the Under 13 Boys Category. He received a trophy and a certificate. Shounak received another trophy and certificate for becoming the Champion in the Under 12 Boys Category in the 26th The Telegraph Schools’ Chess 2018 held at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata from January 27 to February 1, 2018. He scored 6½ points out of possible 9 points.

Atharva Raj of Class III G (Morning) participated in the 12th WBMTA State Muay Thai Championship (Thai Boxing), held at SAI Stadium, Kolkata on February 4, 2018. He became the Champion and received a medal and a certificate.

Olympiad

141 pupils of Classes VI to XII appeared for SOF National Cyber Olympiad on January 30, 2018. 29 pupils participated in SOF International Company Secretaries Olympiad on the same day in the School premises.
